Natural Heritage Status:
The park is famous for its 20 m high cascading waterfall. Sg Pegang flows through the park. The park situated within Teloi Forest Reserve. Home to many dipterocarp trees like Shorea curtiss and Bintangor spp. Wild herbs like tongkat ali and kacip fatimah can also be found in the upper reaches of the park.
Gazettement :
Also known as Lata Assam Jawa.
Present status as recreational forest.
Accessibility:
To the park: Using the old trunk road from Kuala Ketil to Baling, one will not miss the road signs to Lata Bayu Recreational Forest. Road are tarred all the way to the park. There is no public transport service. A taxi can be hired from Sungai Petani or Baling.
In the park: Paved cement walkway and small bridges make easy accessibility in the park.
Affordability:
Entrance to the park is free.
Parking fee: Free.
Gated at night. Need permission to camp overnight. No chalet facilities.
The park is well visited and popular among the local community. According to locals, there are not many foreign tourists visiting the park.
Level of Development:
Facilities for campers available.
Food stores and souvenir shops available in the park.
There are 2 villages near the park – Kg Charok Golok and Kg Banggol with estimated population of 1200 persons.
Popularity:
Popular during public holiday. It was estimated that during 31st August, there were at least 5 thousand visitors. Weekend like Friday and Saturday about 2 thousand visitors. (Figure provided by Encik Wan Dil caretaker for washrooms)
Rubbish can be seen everywhere within the park.
Campers need to apply for permit from the district forestry office before they are allowed to camp inside the park.
There is a 5 km trekking trail to Bukit Tok Bidan at 842m through the dipterocarp forest.
Accommodation:
No chalet facilities.
Campsite available but needs written permission from Pegawai Hutan Daerah Kulim.
Threats:
Garbage: The biggest threat of the park is garbage disposal. Rubbish were strewn everywhere in the park.
Attitude: Attitude of local picnickers in discarding garbage without any consideration of the cleanliness of the park.
Development: Facilities are well maintained and in proper order. No new development observed.
Mitigation:
Enforcement by the park authority and provide more rubbish bins at strategic areas.
Declaration of water bottles and food packages brought into the park.
Disallow food into the park (this mitigation was very successful in the national park of Thailand)
Conservation:
The park is gated at night to prevent unauthorized persons from entering the park. This has reduced illegal activities in the park such as poaching and legal herb collecting.
Benefits to Local Communities:
Local communities involved in small business including food stores and sundries inside the park. Stores were set up outside the park to sell goreng pisang, drinks, swimming apparatus and fruits.
How to Get There:
Using the Butterworth – Grik Expressway (E15) and exit towards Baling (67). Cruise along trunk road 67 towards Baling and half way between Kupang and Baling you will turn to the left using K15. Following the signboard and at Kampung Assam Jawa, turn right to K715. Lata Bayu Recreational Forest is located at the end of state road K715. It is 30 km from Baling and 90 km from Alor Star.
